Porcelain Crowns

Rendering of jaw with dental crownAt Baccellieri Family Dentistry, we only offer the very best in aesthetic and durable restorations. This includes porcelain crowns. Thanks to advances in technology, porcelain has become the preferred material when it comes to cosmetics. Porcelain can be textured and shaped to match the appearance of natural enamel. It also possesses the same light-scattering properties as natural enamel. For these reasons and more, a porcelain crown can be used for both restorative and cosmetic reasons.

What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is a fixed prosthetic appliance that is bonded to an existing tooth. We may recommend a crown to: protect a weak tooth from breaking, restore a broken or worn down tooth, cover a tooth with a minimal healthy enamel, or make a cosmetic modification. A porcelain crown can be used to cover a misshapen or severely discolored tooth. While the main purpose of a crown is to cover a damaged tooth, it also strengthens its structure and improves its overall appearance.

In the past, dental crowns were either made from gold or metal alloys. While these materials are extremely durable and highly resistant to corrosion, they do not offer much in the way of aesthetics. Their indiscrete color makes them less than ideal for teeth in the visible smile line. However, their durability and longevity make them a good option for teeth that need to withstand the strongest forces of your bite.

The Dental Crown Procedure

The procedure for a traditional crown is usually broken up into two appointments: one to prepare the tooth and one to place the crown. This is largely due to the fabrication process, which typically takes a couple of weeks. In certain circumstances, a porcelain crown can be fabricated and placed on the same day. Same day dental crowns are made possible thanks to CAD/CAM software and an in-office milling unit.

The milling unit transforms a single block of porcelain into a precise, beautiful restoration using a digital impression. A traditional crown requires a physical impression that is sent off to our dental lab for the fabrication process. Regardless of which crown you receive, the tooth must be completely reshaped during the preparation phase. This allows us to accommodate the thickness and size of the crown.

Why We Offer Porcelain Crowns

The biggest benefit of a porcelain crown is its unmatched aesthetics. Your crown will not only replicate natural tooth structure, but it can also be designed to look even better than your original tooth. Many patients choose porcelain veneers to improve the cosmetics of their smile. Porcelain veneers are razor thin, and only cover the front surface of a tooth. For these reasons, veneers are only suitable for the anterior (front) teeth.

A porcelain crown is thicker and full-coverage, making them a better choice for teeth in the posterior (back) region of your mouth. Dr. Baccellieri Jr. will be able to determine if you are a suitable candidate for a porcelain crown during your consultation appointment.
